In January of 2019, Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali proclaimed that “The future is electric, we’re not far from starting series production.” and confirmed Ducati would soon start production of its first electric motorcycle.
Now though, Ducati executives have removed any doubt about Ducati’s intentions of producing an electric motorcycle any time soon.
Last month, Ducati’s VP of Global Sales Francesca Milicia backtracked on the commitment of an electric Ducati motorcycle in the near future when he stated that electric motorcycles were not in the company’s current plans.
“Will we produce an electric Ducati soon? No. We think that for the kind of machine we make presently, an electric motorcycle cannot guarantee the pleasure, the range, the weight, etc., that Ducati riders expect.”
Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali supported Milicia’s statement when he stated in an interview with moto.it, “…let’s say that right now, the main complexity in making high performance, high range electric motorcycles lies in the battery. So we are following with great attention the evolution of this component. Right now, we are evaluating when and at what time the amount of energy that can be stored in a battery will somehow make a product like a full-scale electric motorcycle usable.
This isn’t the first time Ducati has stated that an electric motorcycle is in the works. Edouard Lotthé, the Managing Director of Ducati Western Europe, said in 2017 that the company was working on both an electric bike and a scooter. However, according to Lotthé, none will be available until the 2021 model year.
